Q: When Shawn chose to wear a clown mask and the others started to quickly follow, what was your initial thought on the idea? Did you like it from the get-go?
A: One of the first questions I was asked before I actually joined was whether or not I would be ok with wearing a mask… I loved the idea.
Q: You are/were in a Kiss tribute called Deuce. Can you tell us a little bit about that? When did that band first start jamming and is it still going?
A: Deuce was around from 2004 to 2011… just some friends in other bands that were into Kiss to varying degrees.
The drummer and I saw a Kiss tribute band play at a local club one night and we were astonished by how terrible they were.
It was a whole bunch of fun and good money, but it was a lot of work to put on the caliber/quality of show that we did.
People were starting to have kids and get busy with other projects so we all kind of lost interest.
As a matter of fact – I was the only one in the band that didn’t have a kid on the way when we played our last show. Wink
I wouldn’t totally count out a Deuce reunion, but it’s pretty unlikely.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your current band ‘Only’ ? (line-up,releases,website etc)
A: I played bass in Only from 2008 to 2012 – actually I was more of a hired gun for live shows in 2012.
The only full length record that Only did was called Immortal (07 or 06?) I didn’t play on it.
The three main members of Only are now in a band called Green Death who are picking up quite a following in Des Moines. Check em out.
Q: Where did the Hugh Hefner styled pimp jacket come from (mfkr era) ?
A: If my memory serves…. I believe that Shawn’s wife Chantell imparted that to me.
Q: Do you remember how the jumpsuit idea came about? Was it at a band practice or a meeting where one of you mentioned it or something?
A: Not exactly – the original jumpsuits were intended to look like your “Michael Myers serial killer boiler suit” type of thing.
Q: This one’s very important to us here at MFKRboard, but do you happen to remember what Craig had written on the back of his helmet in the MFKR era before he sprayed it black? Written with big black letters on the back but we can’t make out the word.
A: I want to say that it was a Sinclair sticker/logo, but I don’t remember for sure.
Q: Now I know that KISS is your favorite band, what’s your alltime favorite KISS tune?
A: Kiss is dead to me. Idiots. lol That whole rock and roll hall of fame thing really got under my skin.
Actually probably the song Firehouse if I had to pick one.
Q: Which OAPH album is your favorite one?
A: I like all three for various reasons – but I believe Generation Of Vipers to be the best. It was absolutely definitive of the OAPH sound.
Q: If you were asked to describe the atmosphere at the Indigo Ranch in late 98-early 99 when you were recording Slipknot in one word, what word would you use to describe it?
Q: Did drugs play a part in the early days of ‘knot whatsoever? Also, what was the song writing process, in which orders would you do things? Throw riffs and drums together, then have Anders/Corey write lyrics that fit, or did you work your riffs around lyrics. (from Prosthetic William)
A: Actually drugs and alcohol were very strongly discouraged in the early days. Too bad it didn’t stay that way, huh?
There was never really any tried and true method to writing that I can recall. Play riff, drums play along, repeat.
Anders has literally books full of lyrics from my recollection, so I am guessing that most of the lyrics were written before the music in that case.
Q: What did you ever do with your first cloth executioner mask you used before getting the rubber bondage mask? Do you still have it, or any of your jumpsuits? (from Prosthetic William)
A: I have no earthly idea. The story that I got was that my original jumpsuits were cannabalised to repair others during the first tour.
Q: Who is sitting below you and Corey wearing the Liar Mask on the Self-titled Album Cover? It has been said its not Fehn, or Darner. But a “Friend” of the Band. Heard a Rumor it may have been then “Roadie/Clown Tech” Anthony Satone, or “Roadie” Aaron Keltner. (from x9draven9x)
A: In the original photo it was Satone. I believe Chris was photoshopped over it on the album cover. The easiest way to tell this is in the original, the nose goes straight forward
Q: Before leaving the Band, was your Hair at any time Purple? It was said the last Mask you wore (Bondage Hood), was given to James Root. He apparently wore it in a few Photo Shoots and 1 Show before getting the Jester. The majority of Photos with you, your Hair is Brown. There are a few Photos with that Mask and the Person has Purple Hair. Is that you, or James? (from x9draven9x)
A: No… Jim’s hair was purple… that was another photoshop job that was done to the album cover. The photos insde the album are Jim.
Q: If your band could tour with one band, what band would that be?
A: Slayer. Smiley
Q: How old were you when you first picked up the guitar? And what brand was your very first guitar?
A: I think I was 11. My first guitar was some off-brand acoustic (can’t remember)… I still have it hanging on my wall in my bedroom actually.
Q: Do you have a favorite Modifidious song?
A: Probably the first one I ever heard – Strange Occurences.
Q: Can you tell us how you came about joining Deadfront and what the future holds for the band? (from David Pritt)
A: I contacted Aaron Peltz who was in Pale Horse with me about starting a heavier band after Pale Horse broke up again early 2013.
He was pretty full up (he is in like a million bands) but maybe would I want to talk about joining Deadfront? – The intention when DF got back together was that Aaron would play guitar and sing in the band.
Initially after we had spoken I think he had decided to keep it a four piece and play guitar. A couple of months went by, and he was having trouble getting focused on singing while playing guitar – so he
got back in touch with me and I went over to listen and hang out with them. I really loved the new stuff they were doing. Plus I have known all of those guys for years….all great dudes. We’re all vets.
They gave me a copy of the 10-11 songs and I think I learned them all in like three days. It’s just really an ironic twist that I am in that band actually. Who’d a thunk?
Q: If you could be in a super group with you on guitar who would you have in the band on vocals, guitar, bass, drums (from David Pritt)
A: Slayer. 🙂
Q: As a huge On a Pale Horse fan I’d like to know what your favourite song was and your favourite live show was (from David Pritt)
A: Favorite Pale Horse song is definitely Release The Smoke.
Q: Are you still in touch with Slipknot members? (from Manu)
A: I actually don’t think I have seen or talked to anyone since Paul’s funeral.
Q: What kind of guitar/s did you use on the recording of Slipknot’s debut?
A: I played a black Jackson dinky reverse. I still have it and the amp I used on self-titled. The band actually borrowed the amp from me and used it on Iowa as well.
Q: What’s the status of both JBJC and Audatious P?
A: Audacious P hasn’t played since 2005/6?
JBJC is alive and well providing acoustic anxiety laden jackassery for the Des Moines masses.
Q: Is there anymore material with On A Pale Horse, excluding the On A Pale Horse – The Horse Sessions with Anders on vocals floating around? (from Volume3)
If so, what are the names of the songs and will they ever see the light of day?
A: I’m not sure what you are talking about so I really couldn’t say.
Q: Given the current state of the band, with two founding members gone. If you were offered a position to return to the band full time, either on bass or guitar, would you take it?, and why? (from pyramid head)
A: I seriously doubt that any situation would present itself to make that appealing to me.
Q: Is there anyone in the band that you miss playing with, or alternatively, is there anything about your tenure in the band that you miss? (from pyramid head)
A: I miss being in my early 20’s.
Q: I know that you played live at the Runway with Modifidious really early on, but what was your very first live gig and with what band? Also how old were you?
A: I played at a sidewalk sale for a music store when I was 14 – 1988 … can’t remember what we called the band.
Q: How would you describe Anders Colsefni in one word?
A: Andy. 🙂
Thank you Josh for taking the time and answer our questions. We wish you all the best with your life and your future!
